Water covers three-quarters of the Earth’s surface. At depths of between 4,000 and 5,500 meters (13,100 and 18,000 feet) below the level of the oceans, the majority of the planet’s solid surface is abyssal plain. The Challenger Deep, at a depth of 10,924 meters in the Mariana Trench, is the solid surface site on the globe closest to the geoid’s center (35,840 ft). Fresh water bodies cover a smaller portion of the surface, but aquifers hold a vast volume of subsurface water. In many ways, the underwater environment is unfriendly to people, hence it is hardly explored.
